A new recycling campaign called Foil Ball Record Attempt was launched at The Brightwater Commons on Thursday 1st April. In supporting South Africa's promise to deliver a greener 2010, The Brightwater Commons, in conjunction with the Aluminium Federation of South Africa and Hulamin, launched a campaign for the collecting of used aluminium foil for recycling.
In addition to creating an awareness of recycling and the need for waste management, this campaign was also aimed at breaking the SA Book of Records for the most recycled aluminium foil collected. The record stood at 732kg and the aim was to beat this by collecting 750kg.
As an incentive for the public and schools to support this recycling initiative, a competition was included in the campaign. For every deposit of 50g of used foil, one could complete a Foil Ball Competition form for entry into a lucky draw. Prizes included R20 000 in cash, and a Chana Benni 1300cc Exclusive to the value of R89 900. A cash prize of R15 000 from Zibi Environmental would be awarded to the school that collected the largest amount of used foil.
All used foil collected was deposited into the giant soccer ball structure displayed at The Brightwater Commons. At the close of the campaign on Saturday 31st July, the used foil was purchased by Zimalco, a division of the Zimco Group – an aluminium company. The funds went to Lehae La Tshepo, a community support centre based in Windsor. The Foil Ball recycling campaign was also used as a fund raising initiative for the Lehae La Tshepo Centre . This was done through the selling of advertising space on the panels of the soccer ball, as well as on the panels of the collar at the base of the ball.
The winners of the Foil Ball Recycling Campaign & Competition were announced on Wednesday 4th August 2010 at a prize-giving held at The Brightwater Commons.
The winner of the Chana Benni 1300cc Exclusive was Ruth Barnett; and the school awarded for collecting the most used foil was The Bridge Nursery School in Houghton. Whilst Pick 'n Pay at The Brightwater Commons won the tenant category of the competition; the two winners of the centre employee category were Nomandlozi Radebe of Steers and Eugene Makeng of Crazy Store.
Whilst all the used foil is still in the process of being re-weighed and organisers of the campaign are still awaiting the official figure for the exact amount of used foil collected, it is certain that there is at least 950kg's – this is considerably more than the 750kg's that organizers were aiming for!
